Monsoon Season Pool Care in Arizona

Arizona's monsoon starts June 15. Here's what dust storms, wind, and sudden rain do to a pool, what to do before and after each storm, and what post-storm cleanup costs in 2026.

Monsoon Season Starts June 15

Arizona's monsoon runs from mid-June through the end of September. For most of the state it means a stretch of afternoons where the sky goes brown, the wind hits 50 miles an hour, an inch of rain falls in twenty minutes, and the next day is 108 degrees. Every one of those does something to a pool, and the combination is why Arizona pool companies are busiest in July and August rather than May.

Here's what each part of a storm does to your water and what to do about it.

What a Monsoon Storm Does to Your Pool

Storm EffectWhat It DoesThe Fix
Dust storm (haboob)Clouds the water, loads the filter, dumps phosphates (algae food) and siltBrush, run the filter 24 hours, clean the filter, phosphate remover if the water stays dull
Wind debrisPalm fronds, mesquite, oleander, and patio furniture end up in the pool; organic debris sinks and stainsNet the big stuff before it sinks, empty skimmer and pump baskets
Heavy rainDilutes chlorine and stabilizer, drops pH and alkalinity, raises the water level above the skimmerTest and rebalance, drain back to mid-skimmer
Lightning and outagesPump off, timer or automation resetCheck the schedule after any outage; a day with no circulation in July is a green pool
Heat the next dayBurns off what chlorine is left; algae blooms in 24–48 hoursShock at dusk the evening after the storm

The order matters. Debris first, then circulation, then chemistry. Shocking a pool full of leaves wastes the shock.

Before the Season

Do these once in June and you'll spend less on every storm that follows:

  1. 1Clean the filter now. A filter that's already at 8 psi over baseline has nowhere to go when the dust hits.
  2. 2Trim what hangs over the pool. Palms, oleander, and mesquite are the three worst offenders in the Valley and in Tucson.
  3. 3Raise stabilizer to 40–60 ppm. Arizona sun burns through unstabilized chlorine fast, and rain dilutes what you have.
  4. 4Keep a reserve of shock and acid on hand. Pool stores sell out after the first big storm every year.
  5. 5Confirm freeze protect is off and the summer schedule is on. Pump 8–12 hours a day, through the afternoon when storms hit.
  6. 6Put away floats, umbrellas, and anything light. Anything on the deck ends up in the pool.

Don't drain the pool to "make room" for rain. A partially drained pool in June sun risks the plaster, and an inch of rain only raises the level an inch.

After Each Storm

  1. 1Net out floating debris before it sinks and stains the plaster.
  2. 2Empty the skimmer and pump baskets. A packed basket starves the pump.
  3. 3Confirm the pump is running and the timer didn't reset. Run it 24 hours.
  4. 4Brush walls, steps, and the tile line.
  5. 5Test chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and stabilizer. Rebalance.
  6. 6Shock at dusk.
  7. 7Clean the filter once pressure is 8–10 psi over clean baseline.
  8. 8Lower the water level if it's above the skimmer mouth.
  9. 9If the water stays dull after two days, test phosphates.

That's a 30- to 60-minute routine after a bad storm. Weekly service companies usually fold the chemistry into the next scheduled visit and charge extra only for a dedicated cleanup trip.

What Monsoon Cleanup Costs (2026)

ServiceTypical Cost
Post-storm cleanup visit (debris, baskets, chemistry)$75–$200
Filter cleaning (cartridge or DE)$75–$175
Phosphate treatment$40–$100
Green pool recovery after a missed storm$200–$700
Partial drain and refill after flooding$100–$300

Weekly service in Arizona runs $100–$200 a month with chemicals. Many companies include one storm visit a month during monsoon; others charge $50–$100 per extra trip. Ask which before July.

Lake Havasu and the River

In Lake Havasu City and the lower Colorado River valley, monsoon storms are fewer but the dust and heat are worse, and evaporation is relentless. The routine is the same; the water-level and calcium problems are bigger. Plan on topping off more often and watch the tile line.

For the baseline weekly routine the storm checklist sits on top of, see the pool maintenance schedule. If you're hiring a company for the first time this summer, start with how to choose a pool service company.
